Penderyn Whisky Distillery

The distillery that brought Welsh whisky back from the dead — tours and tastings, 20 minutes away.

  • ~20 min drive
  • Food & drink
  • Couples

When Penderyn started distilling in 2000, Wales had not made whisky commercially for around a hundred years. A quarter of a century later, its single malts win world-level awards — and the original distillery sits at the foot of the Beacons, about twenty minutes from your door.

The hour-long tour walks you through the story and the stills and ends the proper way: with a tasting. Groups are capped at twenty, so it never feels like a conveyor belt — book ahead, especially in season.

There’s a well-stocked shop for bottles you won’t find in supermarkets, and the drive over the Coelbren and Hirwaun moor tops is a small scenic event in itself. One of you will need to stay off the tasting glasses — or take a taxi and both enjoy it.

Worth knowing

  • Wales’s original modern single-malt distillery — distilling since 2000, after roughly a century without Welsh whisky.
  • Tours run most days and finish with a tasting; from April 2026 the visitor centre operates seven days a week.
  • Under-14s aren’t allowed in the production area, and the production floor isn’t wheelchair-accessible (an alternative experience is offered).
  • Pairs perfectly with Waterfall Country — Sgwd yr Eira’s trailheads are minutes from the village of Penderyn.
