Ride the Beacons from the front door

A traffic-free valley path starts a mile away, the Dragon Ride’s greatest climbs circle the village, and in 2027 the Tour de France crosses the mountain twenty minutes up the road. Abercraf is a cyclist’s base camp that happens to have a hammock seat.

From the Door

No car required

The valley path — NCN Route 43

The National Cycle Network’s Route 43 currently ends at Caehopkin, on the edge of the village. Point the wheels south and a mostly traffic-free railway path and canal towpath carries you roughly thirty miles down the Swansea Valley to the sea — old railway line to Ystalyfera, the Swansea Canal through Pontardawe, then the riverside into Swansea Bay. Gentle, green and almost entirely off-road.

The home climb

North from the door, the A4067 is the warm-up that never gets old: a smooth, wide climb past Craig-y-Nos Castle and the showcaves to the Bwlch Bryn-rhudd pass, with the descent to Crai Reservoir as the reward. It’s the road the Dragon Ride’s longest routes have used — which makes your morning loop a piece of the toughest sportive in Britain.

The Climbs

Big names, all around

Starts at the door

Bwlch Bryn-rhudd

The home climb — the A4067 rises straight from the village past Craig-y-Nos and Dan yr Ogof to the pass, smooth and wide between high valley sides. Descend to Crai Reservoir and loop home.

~20 min ride to the foot

Black Mountain (A4069)

#95 in the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs and the road Top Gear made famous — around 6km at 5.7% from the north, with hairpins, quarry ruins and one of the biggest summits-on-a-road in Wales.

1.8 km @ 10%+

Devil’s Elbow

The Dragon Ride’s feared timed climb: 1.8km at over 10%, kicking past 15% through the hairpins from Heol Senni towards Ystradfellte. Ride it in a loop over Bwlch Bryn-rhudd.

Tour de France 2027

The Rhigos & The Bwlch

The signature alpine-style sweepers of South Wales — and the Rhigos joins the sport’s biggest stage as the Côte de Rhigos in the 2027 Tour de France, when the race crosses the Beacons.

Gravel & MTB

When the tarmac runs out

From the door

Sarn Helen (gravel)

The Roman road’s gravelly doubletrack runs virtually past the door at Coelbren and Banwen, heading north-east past Henrhyd towards the fort at Y Gaer — a bikepacking classic.

~25 min drive

Usk Reservoir & Glasfynydd Forest

A waymarked circuit on wide forestry track around the reservoir under the Black Mountain — easy gravel, big views, and one of the darkest corners of the Dark Sky Reserve.

~45 min drive

Afan Forest Park

Around 130km of flowing singletrack across six graded trails — Y Wal, White’s Level, W2 — plus a skills park. One of Wales’ great trail centres.

~40 min drive

BikePark Wales

The UK’s biggest bike park at Merthyr: 50+ graded runs from green to pro, minibus uplift, hire and coaching. Earn nothing, descend everything.

Mid-Ride & Fettling

Coffee, cake and a good mechanic

Cyclists’ cafés

Lle Tarw at Ynyswen is the valley’s cycling café — Coaltown coffee, serious tray bakes and bike parking out front, a mile from the cottage. The Changing Seasons tea room at Craig-y-Nos Country Park is the classic stop on the home climb, and Penderyn Distillery’s café marks the turn on a Rhigos loop.

Shops & repairs

Biped Cycles in Brecon (25 min) runs a full workshop including suspension and e-bike servicing, with Brecon Bike Smith operating as a mobile mechanic across the area. For big-shop needs, Tredz in Swansea is 35 minutes down the valley. Bike hire sits right on the Route 43 path at Pontardawe.
