The Welfare, Ystradgynlais

First-run cinema and touring bands in a century-old miners’ hall, five minutes away.

  • ~6 min drive
  • Couples
  • Families

Every valley kept its miners’ welfare hall; Ystradgynlais kept its alive. The Welfare is now a proper arts centre — first-run films, touring bands from all over the world, theatre, comedy and National Theatre Live screenings, all in a century-old institute six minutes from your door.

For a couples’ weekend it solves the eternal cottage question: what do we do after dinner? Check the programme before you travel — there’s usually a film or a gig on, and tickets cost a fraction of city prices.

It’s also the heart of the town: expect a friendly crowd, an interval drink, and the pleasant shock of live music this good, this far up a Welsh valley.

Worth knowing

  • A working miners’ welfare institute turned arts centre — one of the last of its kind still programming year-round.
  • Regular cinema plus NT Live, opera and RSC screenings.
  • Six minutes from the cottage — closer than any city multiplex will ever be.
