The best coffee in the valley hides in plain sight on the Brecon Road at Ynyswen, one village along from The Old Exchange. Lle Tarw — “the bull’s place” in Welsh — is a small, warm, wonderfully quirky café that opened in 2023 and quickly became the local institution.

The coffee is roasted by Coaltown of Ammanford, the Welsh speciality roaster with a cult following, and the counter groans with proper tray bakes: white-chocolate Battenberg brownies, cinnamon blondies, morning pastries — with good vegan and gluten-free options among them.

It’s also something of a meeting point for bikers, cyclists and vintage-car folk, which gives it a friendly, petrol-scented charm all of its own. Grab a window seat, order a flat white and a brownie, and watch the valley go by.

Worth knowing

  • Serves coffee from Coaltown Coffee Roasters of Ammanford — one of Wales’ best-known speciality roasters.
  • A recognised stop on biker and cycling café circuits, with bike parking out front.
  • The bakes are the thing: think white-chocolate Battenberg brownies and cinnamon blondies.
