When the occasion calls for the best table in the region, it’s the Griffin: a terracotta-coloured dining pub between the Beacons and the Black Mountains, listed in the Michelin Guide and named Wales Dining Pub of the Year more times than anyone else.
The kitchen is fed by the pub’s own organic garden and almost everything else comes from within fifteen miles or so — but it wears it lightly: sofas by the fire, Welsh beer on the pumps, no white tablecloths.
It’s thirty-five minutes from the cottage through Brecon, which is exactly the right length of drive home after a long lunch. Book well ahead, especially for Sunday.
